How to Get Started with GBIF Data for My Research – Any Tips?

Hey everyone,

I am new to using GBIF data & wanted to get some advice on how to dive in. I am working on a research project & Also I have heard a lot about GBIF being a great resource for biodiversity data. I am not entirely sure where to start – there is so much data available & I am a bit overwhelmed by all the options.

If anyone has experience using GBIF for their own projects, I want to hear how you got started. What tools or datasets did you find most useful? Any tips on how to efficiently explore and analyze the data? I am interested in learning how to download and filter data for species or regions.

By the way, as I have been researching data storage and analysis methods, I stumbled upon the question, what is cloud computing? It seems such as it could be useful for working with large datasets like those from GBIF – has anyone here used cloud services to handle such data?

Thank you…

I’m generally able to process GBIF data locally, but I have used supercomputer resources as well as things like Databricks and Google Collab before.

As to your first question, I suppose it depends on what you are trying to do and what tools you are already familiar with!

I reccommend you have a look at rgbif, for example:

You might also find a tool like OpenRefine useful.

There are also a number of video’s available on how to use the website: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+use+gbif

Hope that helps!
