BioCoin - biodiversity information cryptocurrency

In a recent blog post Towards a biodiversity token: Bitcoin, FinTech, and a radical suggestion for the GBIF Challenge I discussed the idea of a “biodiversity token”, using cryptocurrency to fund GBIF activities. Turns out there is something like this already, called “BioCoin”, being developed by QuestaGame! The BioCoin website looks very slick, and has Donald Hobern listed as being on their advisory panel. Is this for real?

I’ve attached their white paper describing the idea in more detail: White Paper - Developing a Global BioBIT Coin.pdf (194.7 KB)

So that got interesting very quickly, see https://twitter.com/QuestaDrew/status/1028195375436333056

Donald posted a reaction to this on Medium https://medium.com/@dhobern/hi-all-ive-been-out-of-access-to-the-internet-over-the-last-week-so-i-apologise-for-the-late-2895c5428df8. I’ve added my two cents as well https://medium.com/@rdmpage/hi-donald-the-iphylo-version-of-your-comment-seems-to-have-vanished-into-the-ether-a9bde6992634

I think the original BioCoin idea was badly pseudo-launched, but there’s a lot of promising ideas around the idea of tokens, attention, etc. and it would be a shame if these got lost in the noise around this particular project.
