Hi John, this is an interesting idea! I have been working on something similar to determine whether Environmental Impact Assessments have adequately mapped red listed species in the development area. Have you tried to formalize this method or are you aware of any research on this topic?
While looking for information I found an iNaturalist forum thread (Species Accumulation Curves for iNat data ) here land managers were discussing a similar method to estimate how many species might be in their management area. So it seems this method could be of broad interest.
