Most Recent Synomym

Hello,

Is it possible to know which is the most recent synonym of a species from those listed in the Classification panel. Also when it was named as such…Thanks in advance.

Hi @NC2023,

I don’t think we have exactly what you are looking for. You could check all the synonyms via the web interface by clicking on each of them and checking the reference associated with the names.

Alternatively, you could get the same information by using the GBIF Species API.
For example, if you wanted to get the information for all the synonyms of Albizia inundata (Mart.) Barneby & J.W.Grimes, you would have to:

  1. Find the corresponding taxon key. It is the number in the URL of a taxon page. In this example, it is 2973063 for https://www.gbif.org/species/2973063.
  2. Use that taxonKey to access all its synonyms like this: https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/2973063/synonyms
  3. You can see the publishing information in the publishedIn field. For example: Acacia inundata Mart. was published in Reise Bras.1: 555 (1823). See screenshot below:

We have a recorded webinar for a general introduction to the GBIF API here: Data Use Club Practical Sessions: The API and introduction to rgbif and pygbif and a blogpost here: GBIF API beginners guide - GBIF Data Blog

Thank you very much. That’s very helpful…
