Image hosting needs?

Question for people responsible for data publishing, maybe especially in scientific collections: how much of a cost or obstacle is image hosting to your institution sharing data?

I know anecdotally of would-be data publishers who don’t share data only because they don’t want to do it without also sharing specimen images, and they don’t have access to/can’t afford, say, commercial cloud storage for high-res images. Do others face this or similar challenges?

Publishers of camera trap data face a similar challenge. There are systems for managing images, but not necessarily for hosting those publicly.
