See how old-school tools like bash, grep, unix shell, a laptop and openly available resources helped build some pretty big bee biotic interactions (e.g., plant pollination, parasite hosts) datasets.
Note that many of these bee interactions were sourced from GBIF registered datasets like iNaturalist, Big Bee affiliated natural history collections, US Geological Survey (USGS) and many more.
How would you go about compiling and reviewing a similar dataset?
Bees play a crucial role in food production and as pollinators of wild plants. Increasingly, datasets describing bee-plant interactions are becoming openly available. The Big Bee project and GloBI collaborate to facilitate access to these valuable bee interaction records. In this context, we outline a method for accessing biotic interactions involving bees, including records of bees visiting flowers, bee parasites, and hosts of these parasites. Using commonly available tools and open resources, we demonstrate how to build a bee interaction dataset using a known and customizable data processing workflow that can run on a laptop.
