Are UUID identifiers unique accross institutions and collections?

Hello,
I am a student assistant at the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures. I have a question and would be really glad, if anyone could help me out.
We would like to link collection codes to GRSciColl UUID identifiers. Some bacterial collections have a record as a collection and some as an institute. For example DSMZ ( Data - GRSciColl ) and BCCM/LMG ( Data - GRSciColl ). My question is: are those UUIDs unique across both categories? Or would we need to specify the category to uniquely identify a record with its UUID? For example by referencing the complete URL to this record.

Thanks a lot for your help.
Best regards

Dear HM Lueken,

Thank you for your question. The UUIDs are provided as a whole URL and thus it is clear whether it is an institution or a collection. For example, https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/institution/883f3d24-35e9-462d-b7a3-13c2b9b7260e.

Keep in mind that some GRSciColl entries are imported from other source and might not be imported at the corresponding entry (instituion vs. collection). For example, Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH | DSMZ has been entered as a institution but it might as well be a collection. Thus, one could suggest that it is converted to a collection from within GBIF registry: GBIF Registry.

Or if it has been correctly entered as an institution, then one may add to the instition different collections. More on how to represent instutions and collection on GRSciColl here: GRSciColl - FAQ

Could I suggest that you (or another responsible person) review and update the GRSciColl entries you are interested in? More on how to update the information in GRSciColl here: How to - GRSciColl

Finally, if you are reviewing the existing entries because you would like to publish a dataset and to link properly its records to a corresponding GRSciColl entry, we recommend the following: (1) Before preparing the dataset: explore GRSciColl and review existing entries; if needed update existing information or add missing collections/institutions; (2) When preparing the dataset: provide the collection code in the dwc:collectionCode, the collection UUID (as a complete GRSciCOll URL) as a dwc:collectionID. Analogously, add institutionID and institutionCode of the instutituion to which the collection belongs.
