How are plants assigned to higher taxon groups?

On the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy page it sais:

Catalogue of Life […] provid[es] the complete higher classification above families.

I tried to find information on the Catalogue of Life website about how they do that for the kingdom Plantae. However, I did not find anything.

I would like to know how the assignments to Phylum, Class and Order are made for plants as included in GBIF.

Hi @steveg

The Catalogue of Life uses information from very different sources. The classification for a given taxa depends on the source. For example, the information about this Phylum: https://www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/9JHQ8 comes from the Bryonames: Bryophyte Nomenclator (see the source dataset at the bottom of the CoL page).
In doubt, I suggest to check the source for a given taxon.
