Community Metrics - GBIF Data Blog

Data gaps are a common topic of discussion when talking about GBIF. Taxonomic, geographic and temporal gaps in the global dataset exist, yet we still have problems quantifying those gaps and measuring how well we are doing in filling those gaps. GBIF already provides analytics and country reports both of which provide useful information on data publishing activities but give little signal to what extent these data publishing activities are filling data gaps. With that in mind, we have started to think about how we can provide more nuanced analytics that quantify gaps and identify where priorities for data mobilisation might start.

I like the idea, but would appreciate instructions for a non-programmer on how to try it out. Also, I am not sure whether this would be a positive or negative for persuading more institutions to publish their data to GBIF, the ability to compare results with those that from a local non-GBIF publishing database.
